In Knots

The design process of In Knots started with macramé – incorporated into the textile batik print and physically holding the dress together to form a wearable apparel piece. Flat double knots, knots with loops, half knots, collecting knots and slanting bar knots from cording and dyed yarns were used throughout the macramé knotting to create the neckline and back of the dress.

The textile batik print was created using images of different macramé knots. These images were transferred onto cotton fabric; wax painted and dipped in four different dyes sessions. See this link for the batik design.

Vinyl bodice side panels and belt were painted using the leather painting technique. Stenciling was incorporated into the dress body to allow for parts of the under-dress to show through.

The overall purpose of this piece was to create a unique dress for a woman who had devoted herself to others and was finally going to have a moment for her – to be noticed, and fully enjoy the attention that she deserves.

In Knots was selected and featured in the ITAA 2010 fashion show in Montreal Canada. See the design proceeding for further details.

Project MJ: Harem Chic

Miss Jackson's upscale department store hosted Tulsa's first annual Fashion's Night Out on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 6 p.m.in Utica Square. Fashion's Night Out was originally created by Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour. Fashion's Night Out brings some of the top leaders in the fashion industry into stores for this special late night event filled with trunk and runway shows, photo shoots, and shopping opportunities.

Miss Jackson's sponsored a Project Runway inspired event which they called "Project MJ." Designers competed to create a garment out of Miss Jackson's packaging materials: tissue paper, garment bags, and carboard totes. Harem Chic was inspired by the Miss Jackson garment bags to create a pair of pants that would demonstrate the bags’ volume. The harem pants were paired with a cropped vest adorned with flower shaped tissue papers and a stand-away collar to give an overal “Arabian Nights” feeling. Harem Chic was selected as the winner of Project MJ by a panel of judges - one of who was Project Runway season 6 winner, Shirin Askari. Harem Chic was featured in OSU communications and Rachel Jean was featured in Tulsa People Magazine. Click on the links for more information.
